Marty Zahuranec and Stephanie Slocum volunteered with the Data Center project team on June 5 during the 2015 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games held by Penn State University. This event brings together over 2000 athletes and 750 coaches from across the state and is the largest annual SOPA event in the state. The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Marty, Stephanie, and the Data Center team assisted the tennis athletes.
Hope Furrer Associates is the structural engineer of record for the new two story 56000 SF Penn State University Park Data Center. The center will serve as the central location for research and administrative computing, currently housed at 153 different locations on campus. The University Park site, expected to meet a blend of tier II and tier I performance levels, will also serve as a backup to the new Hershey Data Center site which supports the Hershey Medical Center. Interesting structural features include the mat slab foundation (Can you find PSU’s Beaver Stadium in the background of the slab pour picture?) and the recessed structure for the white space. The mission critical steel frame facility was designed by IDC Architects (A CH2M Hill Company), and is currently under construction with contractor Holder Construction Company.
